Chapter 4 - The Work Outside and Inside Continues
As soon as the weather was favourable in April the front door was installed.
In May Harold installed the lightning rods. Fascia and soffits were added on the back of the cabin.
Dan began to Perma-chink the east end.
The side door was installed, and the back cellar entrance was constructed.
By the end of May the trim had been applied to the doors and windows on the main level.
Rick returned to shingle the roof on the back cellar entrance.
In June Harold bustled around, cleaning up around the cabin, painting, installing window wells, re-grading and redistributing the topsoil around the cabin.
Before he entered the hospital on July 9, 2004, he set in the flagstone walkway and stone steps to the side door. Things slowed considerably for the next month, but the cellar infloor heating grid system and tubing were put in place, and in August R & N Construction returned to pour the concrete over the basement floor.
Tubing and grid visible (above).
In late July Harold grass seeded around the cabin, and by the end of September his landscaping efforts were showing results.
Next on the agenda was to have the rest of the heating system installed. It involved hooking up all the tubing, gauges, etc. to a hot water heater that will not only provide heat to the whole cabin, but will supply all our hot water needs.
October turned out to be a busy time. The carpenters put up the studs for the rooms on the main floor and pondered over the design of the stairs to the second floor.
Harold laboured nightly, scraping off the finish of the stairs that he had salvaged in 1994 when neighbours down the road replaced their 1870's red brick home with a new one.
Carl Armstrong applied the foam insulation for the upper story.
